A few months ago, Costas Voyatzis, the Founder and Editor-in-chief of Yatzer, met Catherine Cariou, the Heritage Director of Van Cleef & Arpels. She took him through the archives and showed him various Museum pieces, among which a collection of astonishing and cartoony animal brooches. Catherine told Costas that one of her, and the Maison’s dreams, was to locate a Puppy brooch from the La Boutique collection. Costas offered up an idea: Yatzer will enlist its online community in order to help Van Cleef & Arpels locate it! The purpose of this search is so that the Missing Precious Puppy can finally return to the Maison and star alongside his animal brooch companions from the collection in a reproduction of an original advertisement from 1966.

The La Boutique collection, first created in 1954, was comprised of fanciful jewelry, such as ear clips and bracelets, made out of yellow gold set with fine stones, hard stones—such as coral, turquoise, agate, lapis lazuli, amethyst, mother-of-pearl and enamel—and precious stones for small details. Each piece was signed, original and limited edition; a combination of magnificent gems and exquisite artistry. “The objective of this line was to introduce a new clientele to the Maison. This made Van Cleef & Arpels the first high jeweler who understood the new needs of women by the launch of this affordable ‘easy to wear’ line,” Catherine informed Costas as she showed him examples of the whimsical La Boutique line which includes the humorous and cartoony animal brooches of the Maison’s bestiary collection.

The items of the Bestiary collection quickly became covetable gifts for everyone, as well as collectors’ items for some of the Maison’s iconic clients. Some exemplary paradigms of the line include the Oiseau clip (created in 1965) which is in the shape of a little, puffed-up bird sitting on a gold branch and comprised of yellow gold with turquoise “feathers” and diamond and sapphire eyes; the Chat Malicieux clip (created in 1962) featuring a black onyx body, tiny ruby nose and cute winking emerald eyes; as well as the proud-looking, Lion Ebouriffé clip (created in 1962) featuring a gold body with black onyx nose, diamond cheeks and emerald and diamond eyes, among other adorable and wholly desirable imaginative creatures in the collection. “Each of these symbolized a personality trait,” said Catherine pointing out some of the pieces, such as the Curious Mouse, the Playful Pony and the Impertinent Kitten. “It made these beautiful, fun little objects the perfect special occasion gift that was sure to please.”

Catherine paused as she showed Costas a copy of the original La Boutique advertisement which appeared on the back cover of a 1966 Van Cleef & Arpels catalogue and featured a collection of brooches including a poodle, a frog, the winking cat, a lion, a baby bird, a parrot and…a puppy. Somewhat melancholically, Catherine confided to Costas that although for the past 20 years it has been her mission to enrich the Van Cleef & Arpels Museum by locating the Maison’s ancient pieces that were a part of the Maison’s DNA and has thus visited auctions, vintage jewelry fairs and private clients worldwide to accomplish this, some items continued to elude her—among which the parrot and the puppy from the advertisement. The rest of the brooches she’s found. “But these missing two have kept me from realizing my and the Maison’s dream of reproducing this original advertisement,” she sadly said.

That instantly sparked an idea in Costas’ mind—he told her that he and Yatzer would help her find the puppy! After all, who likes to hear of “Man’s Best Friend” gone missing?

The Missing Precious Puppy brooch in question is made of knitted and twisted yellow gold and has emerald eyes and a cute little black onyx nose. The reason it’s so rare and difficult to find is because, although Van Cleef & Arpels has kept a list of clients who bought each brooch along with the original moulds for each in the Maison’s archives, the Missing Precious Puppy hasn’t been reproduced as many times as some of the others designs. Catherine shared that the Winking Cat (created in 1954) has been purchased by notable Van Cleef & Arpels customers such as HRH Princess Faiza of Egypt, Queen Sirikit of Thailand, actress Sophia Loren (who bought 4!) and the Maharani of Baroda. Meanwhile, the Lion Ebouriffe (created in 1962) was worn by HSH Princess Grace of Monaco and Prince Aga Khan, among others. And Aristotle Onassis purchased 13 animal clips including the Winking Cat, the Lion Ebouriffé and the Curious Mouse.

“With such information available, then why hasn’t a single Precious Puppy been located or even…why hasn’t Van Cleef & Arpels just recreated a replica of the Puppy from its original mould?” Costas asked. Catherine pointed out that it sounded easier than it has proven to be. “Although we know the names of clients who purchased them in the 50’s and 60’s, the brooches have since changed hands numerous times through inheritances and sales, making a clear cut road to their location impossible,” she elaborated. As far as simply replicating the Puppy from the original moulds, Catherine agreed that it could be done, however it has always been her and the Maison’s wish to locate one of the original pieces from the 1950’s/1960’s in order to add it to the Van Cleef & Arpels Museum’s impressive collection of 800 pieces, including jewels, timepieces, fashion accessories and objects of art.

This is important because Catherine described the Museum as, “the messenger of the Maison, a priceless testimony to the history of the jewelry, design, craftsmanship and decorative art.” After the Precious Puppy is found, he will join his companions in the Museum and together they will all star in the reproduction of the original advertisement from 1966. That is…after Van Cleef & Arpels also locates the parrot.

So, although it will take many shares of the Missing Precious Puppy’s “MISSING” poster, numerous re-tweets and reposts of updates from his dedicated site, and the following of countless online leads—with everyone’s help—this goal can be accomplished! Van Cleef & Arpels has spent the past 110 years fulfilling the dreams of its beloved clientele, from anonymous ladies to screen stars, princesses and queens. We believe that the time has come for us, the friends of the Maison, to help fulfill one of Van Cleef & Arpels dreams, too!

The storied Parisian high jewelry maison was founded by husband and wife, Alfred Van Cleef and Estelle Arpels, in 1906. Ever since they opened their first boutique 110 years ago on the Place Vendome—where the Maison’s headquarters have since remained— it has received worldwide recognition for the quality and originality of its designs and gems, excellence of craftsmanship and innovative spirit.
